A rich history

Centuries ago, travellers, farmers and merchants rested here after their journeys. They stabled their horses and carts on the “Weerplein”, the widening in the Poelestraat that can still be seen today. This square lay behind the Poelepoort, once the entrance to the city from the east. The gate and the old city wall were demolished in 1828, but street names such as “Achter de Muur” (Behind the Wall) still recall these fortifications. Stadtlander has been a traditional Dutch brown café since 1 September 1977. Before that, the building housed a distillery and off-licence.
