They stabled their horses and carts on the “Weerplein”, the widening in the Poelestraat that can still be seen today. This square lay behind the Poelepoort, once the entrance to the city from the east. The gate and the old city wall were demolished in 1828, but street names such as “Achter de Muur” (Behind the Wall) still recall these fortifications. Stadtlander has been a traditional Dutch brown café since 1 September 1977. Before that, the building housed a distillery and off-licence. ![Watercolour of the building on the Poelestraat, with red window frames and an awning](https://stadtlander.nl/media/a639cc1a16495064_1920x2419_a0e0613deaa8e115.webp) ![Black-and-white photo of the building in the Poelestraat, with the name Stadtlander above the awning](https://stadtlander.nl/media/f77da31b20d55e15_1200x1200_12892ea94c1893c1.webp) An eetcafé as it should be ## Simply good At Eetcafé Stadtlander, it’s all about quality without the fuss.
